The information published on Vans Guru is provided for general information and educational purposes only. It is written to help van owners understand common faults and diagnostic principles. It is not a workshop manual, not a substitute for professional diagnosis, and not repair instructions tailored to your specific vehicle.
Vehicle work carries real risk
Working on a motor vehicle can cause serious injury or death if it is done without the correct equipment, knowledge and precautions. Before carrying out any check or repair described on this website, you are responsible for satisfying yourself that you have the competence, tools and safe working conditions to do it.
Particular care is needed with:
- Raising and supporting a vehicle. Never work under a van supported only by a jack. Use axle stands rated for the weight, on firm level ground, at the manufacturer specified support points.
- Cooling systems. Coolant is hot and pressurised when the engine is warm. Releasing a cap or hose can cause severe scalding. Allow the system to cool fully.
- Diesel fuel systems. Common rail systems operate at extremely high pressure. Fuel released at these pressures can penetrate skin and cause life threatening injury. Do not disturb high pressure lines or injectors unless you are trained and the system has been depressurised correctly.
- Exhaust and emissions components. DPF and exhaust components reach very high temperatures and stay hot long after the engine is switched off.
- AdBlue. Diesel exhaust fluid is an irritant. Avoid skin and eye contact and follow the handling guidance on the container.
- Electrical systems. Disconnect the battery where appropriate, and be aware that disturbing supplies on a modern van can affect stored data, immobiliser function and control unit configuration.
- Brakes, steering, suspension and timing components. These are safety critical. Incorrect work can cause loss of control or serious engine damage. If you are not confident, do not proceed.
- Airbags and restraint systems. Do not work on these without proper training.
If at any point a job is beyond your equipment, experience or confidence, stop and consult a qualified technician. Nothing on this website should be read as encouragement to attempt work you are not competent to carry out safely.
Technical information varies by vehicle
The same van model can be sold with different engines, emissions equipment, transmissions and specifications depending on model year, market and trim. Procedures, tolerances and component layouts differ accordingly.
For this reason we deliberately do not publish torque settings, fluid capacities, service intervals, wiring details or similar figures. Where that information is needed, confirm it against your VIN, engine code and the manufacturer workshop information for your exact vehicle. Do not assume that data for one variant applies to another, and do not assume US specifications apply to UK vehicles.
Diagnosis is not guaranteed
Our guides describe common causes and sensible diagnostic sequences. They cannot tell you what is wrong with your van. The same symptom frequently has several possible causes, and faults can be intermittent, combined or caused by earlier repairs. Any list of causes on this site is a starting point for testing, not a conclusion.
Costs are indicative only
Where approximate UK repair costs are mentioned, they are broad general context only. Actual prices vary considerably by region, garage, parts choice, vehicle condition and how much additional work is found. Always obtain your own quotes.
Legal compliance and emissions
Vans Guru does not support or provide guidance on removing, disabling, bypassing or defeating emissions control equipment, including DPF, EGR and SCR or AdBlue systems. In the UK, removing or rendering inoperative a DPF fitted as original equipment is an MOT failure and can make the vehicle illegal to use on a public road. It may also affect insurance. Faults should be repaired properly.
